Tanning FAQ's

What is airbrush/sunless tanning?

Sunless tanning is a concept and industry dedicated to the prevention of skin cancer and premature aging, and to the promotion of healthy tanning alternatives. All sunless tanning products are based upon a similar concept: DHA is an FDA-approved skin coloring agent that causes no harmful side effects and produces a healthy, natural looking tan that wears away within
a reasonable period of time.

Advantages of airbrush tanning:

The growing interest in sunless tanners is a result of consistent and reliable research that links premature aging and skin cancer to the harmful effects of UV rays on the skin. As such, DHA-based sunless tanners have been recommended by the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Dermatology, and the Skin Cancer Foundation.

What is DHA?

Dihydroxyacetone, otherwise known by its street name, DHA, is a derivative of certain plant sources, namely sugar cane. DHA was approved by the FDA as a permanent ingredient on their list of approved cosmetic ingredients in the 1970s. DHA reacts with the amino acids in the surface layer of the skin, producing a brown color that resembles a suntan. The DHA reaction, aka the spray tan or sunless tanner, will wear off as the upper layer of surface skin wears off. This will happen at varying rates for different people, as everyone has different lifestyles, skin conditions, climates, and products that come into contact with their skin.

Will I turn orange?

DHA got off to a rough start decades ago with the introduction of certain sunless tanning lotions, which produced strange odors and orange-like color results. The technology of sunless tanning has come a long way. Today, sunless tanners produce beautiful, natural looking tans.

How long will my tan last?

A "spray tan" fades just like a tan from the sun. The tan fades as the dead layers of skin slough off. With proper maintenance, your tan will last 7-10 days.

Cosmetic Bronzers:

Our solutions contain a cosmetic bronzer. The instant color allows us to see where we have sprayed the solution. Your actual tan will develop over the next several hours. We recommend that you wait at least 10 hours before you take your first shower, get wet or perspire. During your first shower you will notice color washing off. Do not panic! This is the bronzer and is not your actual tan washing off. Once your bronzer is off, you will see your sunless
tanning color results.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Shave or remove hair at least 24 hours before your sunless tan in order to reduce irritation. The real key to a great sunless tan is proper exfoliation. Your skin is like a canvas, and you will get much more even color results if your skin is well-exfoliated and free of body oils, deodorants, etc. You should exfoliate both your body and your face prior to your sunless tan. Your skin is better able to absorb the DHA if there are no barriers in the way.

What do I wear to my appointment?

Wear loose-fitting, dark-colored clothing after the sunless tan to minimize bronzer rub-off onto lighter fabrics, and reduce the possibility of sweating in tighter clothing. Flip flops are ideal.

How do I take care of my tan?

After you are sprayed, your actual tan will develop over the next several hours. We recommend that you wait at least 10 hours before taking your first shower, get wet or prespire. During your first shower you will notice color washing off. Do not panic! This is the cosmetic bronzer washing off. Once your bronzer is off, you will see your sunless tanning color results.

To help prolong the life of your spray tan, limit your time in the shower, blot yourself dry rather than rubbing your skin dry, apply moisturizer two times a day, stay hydrated and avoid contact with harsh chemicals. Avoid Dove soaps and dove products before and during your tan, avoid using any moisturizers containing Alpha Hydroxy Acid. Chlorine in pools and hot tubs can decrease the longevity of your tan too.
